Recreational tree climbing is gaining popularity. This extreme sport may be fun, but safety isn’t anything to fool around with. Tree Climbing requires certain basic equipment.
Here is a checklist of the equipment you should have.
Helmet. Choose a helmet that has a strap and has a snug fit. A hard shell is recommended that will not crack easily on impact.
Climbing rope. The length of the rope is dependent upon the length of the tree that you will be climbing. You will be using your rope along with your harness and the other devices, this will hold you safe as you ascend and while you’re staying on top of a tree. There are many types of ropes from beginner to competition ropes so know what you need before your buy.
Safety Harness belt. There are two types of harness belts – a waist or chest belt. The waist belt can be used along or along side the chest harness. A chest belt can be used to give more balance when climbing. Make sure your harness fits properly, otherwise they become uncomfortable to wear
Spikes. Considered one of the more important pieces of climbing equipment easily attaches to boots and makes it easier to climb trees. They are often made from stainless steel, which allows the spikes to dig into the bark of the tree and help you keep your balance.
Jumar. The Jumar also called an ascender helps provide a good grip on the rope through a locking mechanism. The Jumar is attached to the harness through a sling and then is clipped on the rope and locked in place.
Descender. This is a rappel device also known as a friction brake and is specifically designed for use in descending ropes.
Quickdraws. Climbers use this to attach their ropes to bolt anchors.
Tree boat. Most often used by the experienced tree climber. A tree boat sometimes called a tree hammock, climbers can rest and relax after climbing a tree.
Recreational tree climbing is a lot of fun but don’t get stuck out on a limb without the proper equipment.
